This is a unit that the students conduct all by themselves. The students get into groups, and they choose a theme and four texts with this same theme. They create a website, a blog, or a LiveBinder to present to the class. Using this medium, they teach all four texts (their mini unit) to the class. This unit is tied to Common Core Standards and ACT Quality Core Standards. I suggest that you have upper level students creating these mini units, or have students complete this at the end of the year. It really is a culmination of all they should have learned in a language arts class. Typically, it would take the students 2 weeks to create and one day to teach it to the class, so I would spend about 3 weeks on the unit. When I have done this, it is helpful to break each day into a different task. For example, you might have students select a theme and choose 2 or 3 texts to go along with the theme. The next day they choose the rest of their texts. The following day they would be required to develop their essential questions and learning targets and come up with their formative assessment. Making this a step-by-step process for the students will allow them to not become overwhelmed by such a daunting task.
