Thematic Unit - Inspired by the book, If You Give a Cat a Cupcake. By: Laura Numeroff.
PERFECT FOR YOUR SUB-TUB as a ONE DAY UNIT or can be used in your plans over the course of several days.
Whole Group or Small Group:
Cupcake Addition and Subtraction - Use the all color Cupcake Placemats as Math Mats. Print out class sets of the cupcakes for manipulatives.
Print out the Number Sentence Cards. Students will work the addition and subtraction number sentences by placing the cupcakes on the plate.
Cupcake Number Cards:
Place number cards under the document camera. Call volunteers to count the cupcakes and circle the correct corresponding number with a dry erase marker. Teach students to cross out cupcakes as they count. After showing how it's done place these cards in a Math Center.
Cupcake Number Correspondence Assessment:
Use this assessment following the Number Cards activity to assess students.
Cause and Effect Cut and Paste:
After reading the story. Review and retell the story. Discuss cause and effect. Then use this cut and paste to assess student understanding. Answer key included.
Assess student understanding of the story with this multiple choice comprehension test. Answer key included.
Cat Fact Booklet:
This 8-page booklet makes a great Science and/or Social Studies activity. I use online BrainPop to discuss facts about different types of cats. Students love to cut, staple, read and color their own fact booklet.
The final page of this booklet comes in two levels for easy differentiation.
