This unit will help students better understand different versions of folktales by comparing and contrasting them. Students will need to have access to four different versions of the Gingerbread Man. They will need to read: The Gingerbread Man, The Gingerbread Cowboy, The Gingerbread Girl and The Gingerbread Baby. This thematic unit includes a PowerPoint presentation that will walk students through guided activities that will allow them to think about the story, complete various skill based tasks for each story with a partner and share responses. This unit is designed to meet common core requirements where students can accomplish the following:
Make connections between the text of a story or drama and a visual or oral presentation of the text, identifying where each version reflects specific descriptions and directions in the text.
and Compare and contrast the treatment of similar themes and topics (e.g., opposition of good and evil) and patterns of events (e.g., the quest) in stories, myths, and traditional literature from different cultures. Vocabulary words will be tracked throughout this unit using a word journal (FREE Download). As a culminating activity, students will rewrite their own version of this story.
