This is an activity/worksheet that I created to help students with the concept of theme. First, students are asked to think and brainstorm about the most important word in a story (I use it with Flowers for Algernon, but it could be adapted to use with any other work). Then, they pull quotes from the text that deal with that word or concept. With these quotes in mind, they decide what the author was trying to say about that word or concept (this is the theme!). For their last step, students write a short essay about the theme of the story using a framed response to help organize their thoughts. This can also be used effectively as group or partner work.
