I used this as part of a final exam one year, but it could really work just as well after just about any unit. Instead of focusing on one text, you just have students demonstrate the relationship between several.
Here's the list of stories used in the assignment:
1. The Moon is Down/ WWII era Europe
2. To Kill a Mockingbird/ American South in 1930s
3. Miracle Worker/ American South in late 19th Century
4. Merchant of Venice/ 1600s England
5. Antigone/ Ancient Greece
I easily could have added other stories from the semester or that we later added to the curriculum, like Animal Farm, Night, Lord of the Flies, and ANYTHING Shakespeare. 11 themes and about 50 short answers make it perfect for solo work but maybe even better for group work.
Google Docs link to complete it all online. This assignment is not limited to the stories I used, nor is it limited to the themes I chose, but it's a pretty complete start for you.
The reason the era is mentioned with the text is because some of the connections are made through background information we learned in class, so that's something to consider.
