SHOW YOUR THINKING® is a framework developed to guide students as they develop and practice their critical thinking skills when writing short constructed responses. This framework consists of three steps that encourage the students to slow down, thinking before they jump into writing their responses. The FIRST STEP has students consider what their answer/inference means. As they do so, they develop the criteria that they will use when selecting text evidence. Applying this criteria, they then identify the text evidence that will support their answer. During this SECOND STEP, students also analyze this text evidence evaluating how well it supports their answer/inference. Finally, the THIRD STEP, the students write their short constructed responses explaining how the text supports their answer/inference using the ACED acronym. When completed, their responses demonstrate deeper thinking. The SHOW YOUR THINKING® framework ensures that all the essential components are included and communicated succinctly and concisely.
This SHOW YOUR THINKING® product, developed with Rachel Lynette’s permission, was created to be used with Rachel’s Theme task cards 1-8. Combining the activity pages with the task cards helps the students dig deeper as they consider their answers. First, they think about what the theme means in their own words. This becomes their criteria. Next, considering this, students identify text evidence, thinking about how it will support their answer. Their final step is to write a short constructed response that cites the text evidence and provides an analysis of how the text evidence supports their answer.
Considering the gradual release of responsibility model, these activities have been differentiated into three levels. At each level students are practicing the application of a reading strategy using the task cards as they develop the critical thinking skills necessary to evaluate and analyze text.

These activity pages can be used during whole group instruction, guided small group or independently. Once my students are familiar with the format, I use these cards for deliberate, focused, independent practice when I am working with my reading groups. Completing one card a week provided my students with 8 opportunities to practice inferring theme. Also, I’ve begun using them for RTI purposes. Since the students are required to break their analysis into steps before writing their response, it is much easier to see what challenges them. Do they really understand what their answer means? If so, can they identify specific text evidence? Or, are they unable to explain how the text evidence supports their answer? Gathering this data was extremely beneficial as I began planning how to better meet my students needs.
