In this easy-to grade (and editable) worksheet, students analyze the major components (tone, theme, situation, etc.) of this famous poem by first writing their responses to questions in one column and then supporting those responses to the questions with evidence from the poem and writing that evidence in the next column.
Teaching Tips: There are may videos online of people reading and performing this poem. I show a few of those to my students before we dive in to reading. This helps them understand the poem better.
Have students annotate the poem.
Ask them to draw a map of the journey Hughes takes home daily.
Have them draw out the nouns and verbs they see in the text.
