Identifying a story's theme is a skill required on all state mandated tests. This Smartboard lesson teaches theme. First notes are given so students understand the meaning of theme, then common topics for themes are given, and finally a slide shows tips for making theme statements . Directly stated themes and implied themes are addressed in this lesson. Many example passages for both types of themes are included. This is a great lesson that teaches theme with models and guided practice before the students find themes in their independent books. I have an additional book report activity (or you can use as an activity with any story the students are reading) in my TPT site, so please check it out.
