This is a complete lesson plan for students third-fifth grade. I have been observed twice in two different schools teaching this lesson and have received a 4 on both by my supervisors. This lesson plan includes Common Core ELA Standards. This lesson plan includes a read-aloud of "A Bad Case of Stripes." However, this lesson can be done by reading any other story that has a theme. Stories that have a multi-cultural component enhances the ideas of theme for the students. After reading the story to the students, a worksheet is created that can first be modeled for the students to find theme (using the story that was used in the read aloud). After this worksheet is modeled to students they can be broken up into groups (possibly based on reading levels) and complete the worksheet based on another story (in their book clubs, ReadWorks short stories, class book, etc). In addition, an exit slip is also included as a final formative assessment.
