Need a quick mini-lesson to review or introduce themes in a story? Grab this lesson and practice set to teach what theme is and immediately start identifying one in a text of your choice!

In this lesson, students will:

• Learn what a theme is (and several examples)

• Learn the difference between a THEME and a TOPIC

• Discuss ways to infer one in a novel

• (Complete guided notes to facilitate the lesson)

• Practice activity: write a short literary analysis paragraph identifying and defending a theme (from any book you or the students choose)

• Critique a provided sample paragraph defending a theme (using Harry Potter as the text)

• Take a quiz (using a short story or text of your choosing)

I first made this activity when my students could only somewhat define/explain the concept of theme and needed some practice to find and defend what they thought the themes were in their in choice novels.

Bring this lesson into your classroom if you want to…

• Formatively teach and assess a literary device

• Briefly introduce it to middle or early high school students

• Reteach the concept as review

• Differentiate (or use it in a station!)

• Include it in another unit, choice reading program, or lesson

This 10-page download includes a ready-to-print student handout and the sample paragraph that you can use as a mentor text/example.
