Product Description
This product contains a variety of resources to have your students practice the skill of determining the theme in a fictional passage and/poem. Each resource was made with the concept of gradual release of responsibility in mind- (GRR-I do, we do, you do).

Included in this printables set:
*Three short cartoon strips that perfect to use to introduce the concept of theme. The first cartoon strip walks students through four steps before determining what the theme of the cartoon is. Students are expected to think about those four steps while they look at the other cartoons to determine theme.

*1 theme notes chart & teacher guide-great for interactive notebooks and classroom discussions about how to find the theme, what active readers think about through the reading process, and what types of questions they may see after reading comprehension selections that center around the concept of theme.

*A brief fictional story about learning to not be so quick when it comes to judging others. This particular passage is set up in a very concrete manner with mostly straight forward questions that can be found directly in the text. I use this right after we have filled out the note page to model my thinking when it comes to answering the questions.

*A one page fictional story about a small mouse helping out a strong family lift a pumpkin, followed by a comprehension question page which requires students to examine all parts of the story to determine the best themes that fit the passage.

*Part of this standard calls for students to figure out theme of a poem. My students really struggle with this concept-especially because the poems are usually difficult to comprehend. The poem in this resource is relatively easy and straightforward. I like to use this text before going to more difficult//complex poems. There are two pages of questions that correlate with the poem and make students investigate multiple themes, details to prove the theme, and implications from the author.

*A teacher guide with more step by step tips on how I use the pages are included.
*Answer keys are also included.
