Purpose of Posters

We made these posters to compliment the Common Core standard of CCRA RL.2 for identifying literary themes. Universal theme can be a difficult skill to master for upper elementary and middle school and these posters will assist in learning theme. It takes multiple exposures before students can master this skill and having these colorful and engaging posters displayed in the classroom, allows the students a scaffold to refer to while learning how to identify theme.

Theme is often confused with a subject like love, friendship, etc., but universal theme is an idea or message and these posters help the students to differentiate the differences. These themes can be used all year with any fiction story but another way is with music or movie trailers. The students have lots of fun when they get to hear their favorite song or see their favorite movie trailer and then use the posters to try and identify the theme. Through multiple exposures to universal theme, students will have a good chance of mastery with this skill.

We also have a Greek Mythology mini unit called “Plot Development and Theme” that thoroughly teaches this skill in our store in an engaging way while teaching about mythology.
