This is a terrific opportunity for cooperative learning and to use as an
informal assessment! Following scripted lessons about theme, including references to fables, heterogenous student groups are given a copy of a fable, and a blank puzzle (we used 5x7). A follow-up activity could include individual students writing summaries of the fable and restating the theme. The activity took about an hour, without the writing component. Students enjoyed a chance to be creative, work in a small group with support,and to chat about the fable.
