A graphic organizer is helpful to guide students' thinking about theme while reading a mentor text or during independent reading.
Students identify the "big idea" of their book (this can be a short word or phrase). Then, they include details from the text to support their thinking. Students can write their observations on sticky notes and place them over the corresponding box as supporting evidence, or they can write directly in each box of the graphic organizer.
Finally, students craft a theme sentence using their big idea and supporting details.
