This resource provides a guide to help students identify themes developed by a text. Print this guide out for each student to have, use it to create an anchor chart that is displayed in your classroom, or import it into slides to show your students.
My students had a difficult time moving past identifying theme topics, to actually understanding the themes that develop in a story. I think this is partially because there are multiple interpretations of what exactly we mean when we say "theme." Is it the general idea that continues to "pop up" in a story, or the lesson the reader learns? Ultimately, the goal of this resource is to help students move past simply identifying themes with one word, and towards thinking about the lesson that the author intends to teach.
