Theme and Author's Message Task Cards #2 extend the themes practices in the Theme Task Cards #1. Set 2 has twice as many themes in the answer choices. These 12 cards ask theme using 12 different short stories (realistic fiction). All question stems and answer stems are aligned to STAAR for rigorous practice!

Question Stems

  • Which sentence states the main theme of the story?
  • What does __ learn in this story?
  • What is the theme of the selection?
  • What is the main message of the story?
  • What theme is best supported in this selection?

Answer Stems (Themes)

Some of the themes include:

  • People who have courage will find that there is nothing to fear.
  • People who want to work for others must always keep their promises.
  • People who do not give up are more likely to get what they want.
  • People who work hard are more successful in life than those who do not.
  • Time moves at the same pace no matter is happening.
  • Time seems to pass more quickly in the morning than in the evening.
  • The passage of time is usually noticed more by older people than by younger people.
  • Time seems to pass at different speeds depending on what we are doing.
  • Find joy in personal work can lead to success.
  • Working with others is the best way to solve a problem.
  • Thinking creatively helps people achieve their goals.
  • Showing respect to the boss is an important part of any job.
