Upon opening the document, you will find an introductory note page that will explain what theme is in general. Also, there are several common themes that are listed in a chart for the students to use during the application process.
Following the introduction of the lesson, there are a total of six short stories that are two paragraphs long. They lend themselves simply to finding the theme of the story.
When teaching this lesson, I did two stories a day with the students. The first day, we read the stories together and then disected them to find the theme. The following day, the students worked with a partner to uncover the theme. On the final day, the students completed the final two stories independently as a short assessment.
These are very simple, but very effective. It provides the students with the confidence that they need to begin working with theme. It is not an easy topic, so I came up with this simple way of easing the students into the material.
