I am a Nationally Board Certified Teacher with a master's in reading and literacy and an Educational Specialist Degree in Curriculum, Instruction, and Professional Development. My students regularly score higher on reading and writing tests regardless of the format of the tests. In this lesson students will work collaboratively to determine themes from a story, novel, chapter, or passage. Using vocabulary specific to and found in the story/selection, students will write a paragraph explaining which theme they believe is best suited to the selection and why. This creates an analysis of theme, vocabulary, and the selection.
