Theme is more than just the “topic” of a piece of writing. This unit contains information and activities designed to familiarize students with the element of theme in a piece of literature. The lesson includes definitions for uncovering theme , illustrations of good and bad choices of theme, story examples, teacher discussion notes and a graphic organizer. This information is shared through a student informational handout, an activity for sorting out general from specific, a worksheet matching theme to story, and the graphic organizer which can be used with any short stories the students may read in class or independently.
