This power point presentation is common core aligned, and is complete with Marzano learning scales. It teaches students that topic and theme are different. In fact, it teaches that what we have normally referred to as a theme (i.e. love, acceptance, family, honesty, etc.) are not actually themes, but rather topics embedded within a story. This power point helps students understand that theme is actually what message the author is conveying about love, acceptance, family, honesty, as this is how theme is actually presented on standardized testing.
The power point has a link to a youtube video, and also discusses the theme of two movies, and two stories. It also includes learning scales to track student progress, and exit slip questions. You will need to have access to the book "The Story of Ferdinand," as there is an activity on one slide that uses that book to discuss theme.
