When teaching any lesson, using standard assessments can get boring. This is a cool, interactive way for students to show that they truly understand how to identify the theme of a story.
This project is called Theme in a Bottle. Students will write a letter from the main character of book to anyone who may find their message in a bottle.
In that letter they will identify the lesson they learned throughout the story and must use at least three pieces of evidence in their writing to support that lesson.
This will be a fun way to assess a student's knowledge of theme and a fun hands-on project that students will enjoy.
It also includes a example letter for students to reference and a rubric for grading the project.
Aligns with Florida Standard:
LAFS.5.RL.1.2: Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the text.
