This project can be used with any novel or short story working on identifying a theme portrayed throughout a novel. The file contains a common core page at the end showing the standards met for grades 4-8.
The project is set up for each student to create their own graffiti wall on a poster that represents one theme found throughout a book with great detail and support. As a class, all of the posters can be combined together to create one large wall of theme.
You can be reassured that this file has everything you need to implement this project. This file contains an overview page to share with the class on requirements, student brainstorming pages which requires students to find specific examples of the theme through quotations, events, and symbols, a student checklist to make sure all requirements were met, a student and teacher grading rubric, a student reflection page, an I can statement checklist aligned to national standards covering theme and symbolism, and a common core page showing national standards for 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade that can be met using this activity.
This is a great challenging and creative activity that not only requires students to use critical thinking skills, but also requires students to use speaking skills to support their project to the class.
I have used this project in my class with my students, and it was a complete success. I hope you enjoy! :)
