This project can be used with any novel or short story working on identifying a theme portrayed throughout a novel. The file contains a common core page at the end showing the standards met for grades 4-8.
The project is set up for each student to create their own play list on a poster(shaped as an ipod) that represents one theme found throughout a book with great detail and support.
This file contains 25 total pages to guide your students through each step with great detail and preparation. A brief summary of the activity is listed below.
Step 1: Pick one theme that is portrayed throughout your book
Step 2: Use the attached planning pages to help you brainstorm ways the author supported this theme. The theme may be supported through dialogue, events, or symbols within book.
Step 3: Look through the supporting evidence/examples that you found and pick the top ten examples that support your theme best.
Step 4: Using the play list planning page, pick 10 songs to represent each symbol, action, or piece of dialogue from the book. You should be able to compare the lyrics of each song to each example that you chose with great support, detail, and analysis.
Step 5: Create your own personalized large play list on a poster board to present to the class showing your theme through the representation of a play list consisting of 10 songs.
Step 6: Describe in 10 small paragraphs why each song serves as a great addition to your play list to support your overall theme.
You can be reassured that this file has everything you need to implement this project. This file contains an overview page to share with the class on requirements, student brainstorming pages which require students to find specific examples of the theme through quotations, events, and symbols, a student checklist to make sure all requirements were met,a direction page with step by step guidance on how to create supporting paragrahs, a student and teacher grading rubric, a student reflection page, an I can statement checklist aligned to national standards covering theme and symbolism, and a common core page showing national standards for 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade that can be met using this activity.
This is a great challenging and creative activity that not only requires students to use critical thinking skills, but also requires students to use speaking skills to support their project to the class.
I hope you and your students enjoy! :)
