Do your students need practice identifying the theme in a story? This is an engaging activity where your students read a story and determine the hidden message of the story. This digital resource uses Google Slides and contains four fiction passages.

After reading each story, your students will determine the theme and type it on the display card.

Besides the four passages, there is a slide that explains the cupcake analogy. I use the analogy of theme-filled cupcakes because it provides such a powerful visualization that students can associate with the definition of theme. Like the crème filling in a cupcake, you usually can’t see the theme explicitly stated in a story. Rather, it is the “hidden message” in the story.

These slides are identical to the ones you will find in my Theme-Filled Cupcakes Craftivity- this simply provides you with another presentation option. If you already own the printable worksheets and you would like to own this digital version instead, please email me at Include a copy of your receipt showing that you purchased the printable craftivity before 4/2/20, and I will send you this digital version for free.
