Students read multiple passages and infer a theme for each.
These four print-and-go tri-folds target the skill of determining the theme of a piece of literature. You can use these theme tri-folds over the course of 4 days to provide targeted instruction on this topic.
As I was creating these tri-folds, I pictured myself using them with small groups of students. Specifically, I envisioned sitting around a table with a group of students who could benefit from targeted instruction and who needed additional opportunities to practice identifying the theme after reading. That being said, however, you can also successfully use these tri-folds in a large group setting or assign them as independent work.
These themes in literature trifolds progress from basic to more complex. Answer keys are included, along with additional teacher notes for EACH tri-fold. CHECK OUT THE PREVIEW to get a good feel for what you will get if you choose to purchase this resource.
Tri-fold #1: The main purpose of Book #1 is to teach students what a theme is, and to introduce them to common themes so they can hear how themes “sound”. A definition for "theme" is provided on Panel A, and Panel B features a list of common themes. On Panel C, students read a short passage and identify the theme. On the final two panels, a short book summary is provided, and students must choose which of the four themes listed matches the book summary.
Tri-fold #2: Students begin by differentiating between "main idea" and "theme" on Panel A. The main objective for the rest of Book #2 is to help students understand that the theme is explicitly stated occasionally, but most of the time, it needs to be inferred. This tri-fold features four different reading passages.
Tri-fold #3: The primary purpose of this tri-fold is to show students that a book or passage may have more than one theme. Two longer reading passages are included, and students must identify two possible themes for each passage. On the final panel, students are given the opportunity to “be the author”. They are given a theme, and they must plan a story that conveys the theme.
Tri-fold #4: The main objective for this tri-fold is expose students to multiple choice questions related to identifying the theme of a reading passage. Students will likely encounter questions like these on standardized tests. This tri-fold includes 4 different passages followed by 4 multiple choice questions.
