This activity is designed to be an extension to any core classroom text that deals with a theme of racism. It was originally used with "The Kite Runner," but could also be used with:
"A Raisin in the Sun"
"To Kill a Mockingbird"
"The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian"
"The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn"
"The Color Purple"
"The Bluest Eye"
"A Lesson Before Dying", etc...
The lesson has students analyze the way racism is portrayed in the song "Accidental Racist" and then write their own responses to the song. Besides reading the song and connecting it to classroom literature, students also read informative texts in the form of opinion pieces from the New York Times.
This product includes a lesson plan, CCSS standards, handout, song lyrics, and copies of each article.
