These materials include activities for follow-up after reading There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Bat. The materials DO NOT include the book.
Lessons provided include the following:
Lesson: Read aloud, or have students read aloud the book
VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITY
Lesson: Read aloud a Vocabulary Development Clue card,
and have students label the item described.
The student that labels the item then feeds the item to the Old
SPIN – TELL – COLOR (Labeling and Stating Attributes)
Lesson 1: Give each student a worksheet, crayons, and
supplies for a spinner. Have students take turns spinning, then
labeling the item on which the spinner stops. Students may
color each item after labeling. Race to see who labels all of
their items first.
Lesson 2: Give each student a worksheet, crayons, and
supplies for a spinner. Have students take turns spinning,
then providing two or more details about the item on which the
spinner stops. Students may color each item after providing
details. Race to see who describes all of their items first.
SEQUENCE & RETELL
Lesson: Students should number the items in the order in
which they appeared in the story. After numbering the items
the students should retell the story in correct sequential order.
Students may color the worksheet as a reward.
DRAW & DESCRIBE
Lesson: Give each student a Draw and Describe worksheet.
Have the students draw a bat, then write a paragraph
describing their bat. You may want to provide a word
bank of vocabulary you would like for the students to
incorporate into their writing.
FIND A RHYME
Lesson: Give each student a rhyming bats worksheet and 7
crayons. Have the students find the words that rhyme.
Students should color the bats for each pair of rhyming
words the same color.
Lesson: Have students find the targeted words from the story
Lesson: Read aloud the clues and have students fill in the words on the crossword puzzle
SYNONYM WORD WORK
Lesson: Read aloud each sentence. Have students identify and write the appropriate synonyms in the blanks.
ANTONYM WORD WORK
Lesson: Read aloud each sentence. Have students identify and write the appropriate antonyms in the blanks.
LISTENING FOR DETAILS
Lesson: Read aloud each sentence. Students should circle or color the image that is described.
STORY DETAIL QUESTION GAME
Lesson: Using the included game board, spinner and question cards, answer story detail questions.
