After reading There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly by Simms Taback, have your students sequence the story events and practice retelling the story using their completed activity.

This activity has been differentiated four different ways to meet the needs of the learners.

*Version One: Pictures Only
-Black and white pictures of the the following objects: fly, spider, bird cat, dog, cow, horse, and old lady

*Version Two: Black and White Pictures Labeled
-Black and white pictures of the the following objects: fly, spider, bird cat, dog, cow, horse, and old lady

*Version Three: Black and White Pictures with Beginning Sounds Missing for Each Picture

*Version Four: Black and White Pictures with Writing Line Below
-Students use temporary spelling to write the name of each picture

*There are also two different cards that can be used to glue on the sentence strip. Both cards show a picture of the book. One card has a spot for the student's name. The other card has a spot for the student's name and is labeled "Sequencing and Retelling".

Student Directions:
1. Color the pictures on the sequencing cards.
2. Cut out the cards and glue them on a sentence strip in sequential order of when the objects appear in the text. The card with the picture of the book should be the first card glued to the sentence strip.
3. With a partner or in a small group, practice retelling the story using the picture clues on the sentence strip.

Teacher Notes:
*Video tape the students retelling the story to upload to your classroom webpage, student e-portfolios, or to share and revisit the comprehension strategy with the class.
