PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The little old lady is back, just in time for St. Patrick's Day! First she swallows a clover, then a daisy, butterfly and bird, followed by a pot of gold. Then a leprechaun comes along that makes the little old lady giggle and out pops a St. Patrick's Day surprise.

Included in this download is everything you need for a set of small group activities for "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover".

Includes:

- 10 visuals to help students while reading and retelling the story (includes the old lady, all of the things she swallowed, a "kiss", and the surprise at the end!)

- An 11 page (including cover and "the end") sequencing book - students will match picture to page and fill in the blank for each page with a picture to match. The sequencing book asks students to order the the things that the cold lady swallows, when the leprechaun comes along that makes her giggle, and the surprise at the end. The book has a predictable pattern for the pages ("There was an old lady who swallowed a/some ...") to help struggling readers feel successful.

- A traceable sequencing book in both color and black and white. For your students who are emerging writers who have difficulty copying words or your students who are having trouble with the retelling aspect of the book. Students can use the outlined word in the book to match to the word on the picture and then trace the word independently.

*All images are provided in color and in black and white

Day 1: introduce book and read with visuals support - I pass out visual cards to my students so they each have a similar amount, we talk about what is on each card, and as we read the story we listen to hear when the cards are used. My students pass the cards to the center of the table and we place them in order.

Day 2: re-read book with visuals in same manner as Day 1, allowing for students to "help" with the retelling of the story, then if students are showing familiarity with pattern and story, we begin the sequencing book

Day 3: Read book again for familiarity and work on building individual sequencing books with small group - students each read their book independently to the small group before they go home :)

I use these books with my small group of special needs Kindergartners who are primarily non-readers. My students benefit from the multiple readings of the book so that they come to predict what will happen next and become confident with their retell of the story. If you are reading with a group of stronger readers, you can condense this down to one or two days worth of activities.

My non-readers felt very successful with this book - the pattern was easy for them to pick up and they were all successful at independently "reading" their book before they went home.

Happy Reading!
