This is the third set of story problems based on The Hobbit. The problems form a continuous narrative that can be read independently of the book or the movie.
This collection includes the events recounted in Chapters 13-19 in the book, which roughly corresponds to Part 3 of the movie released in December, 2014. These problems are appropriate for students in Grades 4-5.
There are problems requiring all 4 whole-number operations including 2- and 3-digit numbers…problems requiring students to read and use a table and graphs, including a coordinate graph... problems…problems requiring conversion of rate of travel, and so on.
Solutions and a set of notes on the problems are included at the end.
Common Core Standards:
3.MD.3: “Solve one- and two-step problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs.”
4.OA.3: “Solve multistep word problems posed with whole numbers and having whole-number answers using the four operations...
4.NF.4.c: “Solve word problems involving multiplication of a fraction by a whole number…”
4.MD.2: “Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances…”
5.NF.6: “Solve real world problems involving multiplication of fractions and mixed numbers…”
