This is a middle school drama activity that I came up with. I guess I heard the song "To Everything There is a Season" by Pete Seeger and started thinking about how to use that idea in a quick performance in my class.
In this activity, student groups create a variety of vignettes in which the actors are frozen for moments before making a smooth transition into the next scene.
I work with beginning drama students in middle school and have had success with this activity. It forces students to think of different emotions and scenes that each "time" represents. It also forces them to work as an ensemble, ensuring that everyone in the group knows what to do and when to do it.
In middle school, we work on facial and body expressions and how you can communicate to the audience without even talking.
Try it and let me know what you think.
