There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat! Speech and Language Companion includes activities for students PK-5th grade. Help the old lady celebrate Halloween with retell and story expansion activities.

Activities and Resources Included in this packet:

Multipurpose story pictures-(bat, owl, cat, ghost, goblin, bones, wizard, “trick-or-treat”) for sequence & retell

Roll and Cover- Roll the Die. Describe the story items with attributes (color, shape, size, function, material, category, location, etc.)

Roll and Color- Black & White version of the roll and cover. Students roll the Die. Describe the story items with attributes (color, shape, size, function, material, category, location, etc.) then color the pictures.

8 Step Sequencing Chart- Students color and cut out the story pictures provided and glue them in the order they occurred. Students can retell the story using temporal words, such as: first, then, next…

2 Venn Diagrams-Students compare and contrast a bat and an owl. An open-ended Venn Diagram is included to compare other story items or to compare this story to another “Old Lady” story.

24 Comprehension Question Cards- What, Where, Why, phonemic awareness, inference questions.

Frayer Model-(Bats) Define, Label and Describe bats using the graphic organizer. “can…Have…Are…Live…”

12 (6 sets) Rhyming Cards- bat/hat, boast/most, bone/groan, etc.

TIER 2 Text-Based Vocabulary- groan, howl, imagine, shush, dizzy, rattle

Open Ended Game board- to be used with comprehension or rhyming activities.

Old Lady Face with cut-out mouth to “Feed” her the story items.
