Each child needs a pool game board. I put 10 to 12 words in a game. I put each of these 10 words in the game 3 times. I put 2 snake cards per child in the game. I will add discarded snake cards back in the pile if needed. I put 2 – 3 of the rain and sun cards in the game. Copy everything on cardstock and laminate.
The children will draw a card, read the word, keep the card if they know it, and discard it if they don’t. I tell my children the missed word and let them keep it the first time we play. The next time we play they discard the card if they can’t read it. We usually play at least 2 times during literacy stations. If a rain card is drawn the child loses all their cards to the discard pile. If a sun card is drawn, the child takes a card from every child playing. If a child draws a snake they say, “There’s a snake in my pool!” and place the snake in their pool. When any child gets 3 snakes in their pool, the game is over. The child with the most cards wins.
