There's a Worm in my Apple!
This is a sight word game using the first 40 words of the McGraw-Hill Reading Wonders kindergarten series. It includes 35 additional words, color words, and the number words zero – ten. There are also some blank cards included to add your own words. The words in the game are: I, can, the, we, see, a, like, to, and, go, you, do, my, are, is, little, she, look, for, have, of, they, said, want, here, me, this, an, to, at, on, it, went, big, in, as, am, who, come, not, if, of, did, him, had, play, was, where, he, with, what, good, let, off, does, help, has, no, too, up, down, goes, away, after, stay, back, came, will, off, man, girl, oh, yes, ran, day, 11 color words, and 11 number words.
Each child needs an apple game board. The children will draw a card and read the word. They keep the word if they know it and discard it if they don’t. I tell my children the missed word and let them keep it the first time we play the game. The next time we play they discard the card if they can’t read it. We usually play at least 2 times during literacy stations. If an apple core is drawn the child doesn’t get to draw a card and loses one apple card to the discard pile. If an apple tree is drawn, the child draws 3 more cards to read. If a child draws a worm they say, “There’s a worm in my apple!” and place the worm on their apple. When any child gets 3 worms on their apple, the game is over. The child with the most cards wins.
