Today's students are surrounded by technology and motivated through the use of it in the classroom. Allow your students to become the designers of the very technology they use! This app engineering activity can be used as an All About Me activity at the beginning of the year, for a giant classroom smartphone displaying what you've learned, or as an activity for any subject area, especially social studies, English Language Arts or math instruction. With this app template, there are so many ways for students to show you what they know!

In this 21st century learning activity, students become app engineers. No matter the subject being studied, students are able to design their own apps based on what they are learning in the classroom. "There's an APP for that!" templates allow students to create an app (or set of apps) and explain their thinking for a variety of subject areas. A list of ideas for use is provided, as well as images of student examples.
NOTE: The student-designed app examples provided are a result of student research using laptops and iPads to learn about the southern states in social studies. Students either chose to research a capital city, landmarks in the region or state symbols of the region.
What apps will your students create? Inspire their creativity by challenging them to design useful and innovative apps that they would wish to download (if only they had their own smartphone)!
