In this challenge, based on an idea from PBS Digital Media, students work in groups to construct a house out of file folders. They record data inside and outside the house. Based on this data they decide where to insulate the house and which material to use. They then repeat the data gathering to determine how effective their modifications were.
There are reflection questions that address the principles of heat transfer, insulation, and particle motion. Rubric provided.
1.Data gathering includes taking thermal images. If you do not have thermal cameras, there are downloadable free apps that will work on iphones and/or ipads.
2. A materials list is not included purposefully, so that each teacher can determine what works best for their situation.
