Description
Thermal Energy and Heat Transfer Unit Students will learn about the three types of heat transfer: convection, conduction, and radiation. Students will plan an investigation to determine the relationship between mass and thermal energy and substance and thermal energy. This unit will take ten days if you do all the activities!
This unit includes:
- response pages
- an informational text article
- interactive notebook flaps
- two slide shows
- three complete labs
- one investigation for students to plan
- reading responses
- a two-page quiz
- answer keys
This resource starts with phenomena! Students will then be introduced to thermal energy with an informative slide show. They will take notes with a strategic note-taking guide. Students will read an article about heat transfer and investigate convection currents.
The second slide show will teach students about planning an investigation and identifying an experiment's independent, dependent, and controlled variables. Students will identify these variables in two more labs. One is on mass and thermal energy, and one is on material and thermal energy.
Next students will plan their investigation. Suggestions are given, and a planning guide is provided.
This is a HUGE unit that fully covers these standards:
NGSS MS PS3-4 Plan an investigation to determine the relationships among the energy transferred, the type of matter, the mass, and the change in the average kinetic energy of the particles as measured by the temperature of the sample. [Clarification Statement: Examples of experiments could include comparing final water temperatures after different masses of ice melted in the same volume of water with the same initial temperature, the temperature change of samples of different materials with the same mass as they cool or heat in the environment, or the same material with different masses when a specific amount of energy is added.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment does not include calculating the total amount of thermal energy transferred.]
Utah SEEd 6.2.3 Plan and carry out an investigation to determine the relationship between temperature, the amount of heat transferred, and the change of average particle motion in various types or amounts of matter. Emphasize recording and evaluating data and communicating the results of the investigation. (PS3.A)
