This organizer helps students learn how to make clear and strong claims (arguments and thesis statements). It is based on what I call the "leaf and root" idea: The leaves are what you can "see" in a text (facts, details, etc.). The "roots" are what this information means. This helps students (at all levels) organize what they know from their reading and move this information into deeper, more analytical thinking, i.e. what this information means. Students record what they "see" (leaves), analyze what this means (roots), and move on to make a formal claim (leaves + roots combined) from their gathered information and ideas. Sweet!
