I have used this resource with both my fifth graders and sixth graders. It can also be used with seventh and eighth graders. First, we look at the sample thesis. Then, students work in groups to come up with a thesis. They discuss as groups what their stance is and decide on one. This is a great way to have students engaged in discourse. After students come up with a thesis, they share their question and thesis to the class because each group has a different question they are writing a thesis for. Students love hearing each others questions. Lastly, students all answer the same question independently, which makes it easy for teachers to grade. Students love this activity!
