Step-by-step practice of several of the steps needed to create a complete multi-paragraph essay with thesis/claims, reasons, and supporting evidence.
- Sentence sort where students identify a reason and related evidence (3 reasons/related evidence for 2 paragraphs on two different pages). One essay is about Mr. Smith, a principal, and the other is about Ms. Hill, a classroom teacher. After sorting, students glue slips of paper on accompanying graphic organizer and write a thesis/claim sentence to go with identified reasons/evidence. (Answer key provided)
- Quick practice reason writing where students are given related pieces of evidence in a table with space at the top of the table for them to write a reason that connects the evidence (in a sentence). (6 groups of related evidence total on two different pages).
- Graphic organizer on which to glue sort or to use as blank for planning future essays.
