This test is for the story, "They Call Her Molly Pitcher", from the 5th grade Common Core Edition of Journeys. It has five vocabulary questions with part B's, eight comprehension questions with Part B's, and a constructed response question. I have taken the original test created by Journeys and have created a Part B for each question; I cut a couple questions out. For the Part B in the comprehension portion, I have provided four details from the story that could possibly support the answer to Part A. For two of the questions, I have asked that students explain WHY they chose their answer to part A and to provide a piece of text evidence to support it. Along with this, I have requested that the students write the page number where the detail was found, which encourages them to go back in the story and look. For the Part B of the vocabulary portion, I chose four details from the story, and the students have to decide which one best helped them decide the definition. Finally, at the end of the test, there is also a constructed response question. I use a four paragraph format for my constructed responses including: an opening paragraph, two body paragraphs (one for each key idea), and a closing paragraph. For this testing format, it should be given as an open book assessment. Overall, I have found that taking a reading test that is formatted like PARCC has better helped prepare my students for this assessment. Additionally, it has helped them practice the skills of looking back in the text, rereading, skimming, providing text evidence, etc., which are all skills in which good readers practice.
