The Badging For Education's (BFE) Open Badges are based on the Open Badges Specification (JSON-LD context v2.0) of the Mozilla Open Badges Infrastructure (OBI) and Open Badges Ecosystem. The Open Badges Specification is the universal standard for badge creation, issuing and storing. This makes them easily transferable to other companies or organizational platforms, as well as posting to social media such as Linkedin, Facebook and Twitter. For more information on OBI and Open Badges Ecosystem go to https://openbadges.org
Thinglink Open Badges
There are two levels for the Thinglink badges; Creator and Trainer. The Creator badge is used to recognize teachers who have the skills necessary to use Thinglink in their classroom as well as having had their students create Thinglinks. The Trainer badge is for the teacher with the skills necessary to train others in using it.
Earn 2 Learn
This is an Earn 2 Learn badge. Earn 2 Learn badges are designed to allow learners to earn the badge while learning a new resource or skill. Each set of requirements include links to quality, carefully chosen tutorials so earners learn while they work through the badge requirements. It's a self-paced course with a badge awarded at the end! Already know how to use a resource? Then, just skip the tutorials.
Your purchase is a PowerPoint file that contains a link to a Google Doc that has the requirements for that badge. Within the PowerPoint are slides with different badge designs for you to chose from that allow you to customize the badges by changing text, color etc. PowerPoint was chosen over more robust graphic editors because it is usually provided free to teachers by most school districts, most teachers are already familiar with it and it is easy to learn how to use as a graphic editor (no steep learning curve such as with Photoshop). Using our graphics, list of requirements and an Open Badges platform for creating, issuing and storing such as Badge Craft, you have everything you need to begin using Open Badges with your school or organization.
If you use the free Badge Craft platform (www.badgecraft.eu) to create and issue badges then we give you the rights to copy the badge under their "Import Editable Copies of Badges" feature. Just email us that you are using Badge Craft and that you want the rights to copy the badges you purchased from us. Then you only need to make minor changes. For instructions on using Badge Craft that also includes how to copy our badges, go to bit.ly/badgecraft. There are a number of good, free badging platforms you can use such as Badge List, Credly, Red Critter, For All Rubrics etc. Badge List was our number two choice. For instructions in creating your badge with Badge List using our products, go to bit.ly/badgelisthowto.
The purchaser can edit the MS PowerPoint badge image (graphic) that comes with their purchase to suit their needs. Once they have the badge image they want, they upload it to the platform they are using and then add the individual requirements. For Badge List and other platforms, you won't be able to just copy ours. Instead you will assemble the badges by uploading our image and then copying and pasting each requirement from the Requirements Doc. Badges have between 5 and 15 requirements. If you are using Badge Craft, you only need to upload your customized image and then copy our badge from the badge library. You may or may not want to make some minor edits. If you're new to badging and/or your school or organization isn't already using a badging platform (some LMSs have them built in), then we suggest that you use Badge Craft and copy our badges.
