For Emergent Readers Grades K-1
These activities are ready to copy and go, without need for the sub to read lengthy directions. Explanations for students and for the sub are incorporated as scripts which headline some but not all worksheets. The only equipment your sub needs is a copy machine; the only supplies your kids need are pencils, crayons, scissors, and glue.
Incuded in this file: morning and afternoon large group “messages” for students to complete and for the sub teacher to use as “get acquainted” and “end of day wrap up” meetings. Each message should take from 30 to 45 minutes of class time.
Reader Response papers for students to write after they have read independently or with an adult for 30 (or more) minutes. For K-1st grade level students, it is suggested that students do the reader response forms in a small group with the substitute teacher. Students will record what they learned about plot, characters, setting, and new words, whether they read a portion of a book or the whole thing. They also have a place to rate the reading with 4 ?’s (4 = great...1 = yuk) These reader response papers provide the opportunity for small group or large group sharing upon completion.
In literacy block, math, and social studies, students will focus on Things To Ride. In math they will make a “Things to Ride” counting (1-10) book; add (1-5) and subtract trucks (from 8); match number words to color trucks.
In social studies they will cut out and match flashcards for eight different modes of transportation (or things to ride).
In literacy block they will make an ABC Book of Things to Ride; practice matching sentences to picture; writing sentences; and cutting out sentence words to form a sentence. They will read two comprehension passages and respond to comprehension questions.
