Say goodbye to clips, cards, and sticks. The Responsive Classroom way of discipline promotes children learning to take responsibility for their actions.
When a student cannot participate in the classroom environment due to distractions or unwanted behaviors, simply give him or her time to reflect in a quiet spot. Some teachers call it a “take a break” spot, or a “safe spot.” Whatever you decide to call it, set up a spot in your classroom where a child can decompress and regroup in order to rejoin the activity or lesson This area should have a timer (sand timers work best!). I ask my students to sit and think about their choices and complete the form in this document. When they’ve completed their time out, and have can now behave in a way that follows your classroom rules, they are able to rejoin their classmates.
