In this activity, students will follow the solution path to discover how to add and subtract when using scientific notation.
This is done by verbalizing the solution process — or sharing thoughts with students so that they can effectively crawl inside a teacher's brain — it is what´s known as a "think-aloud."
I have created flow charts that help students get inside my teacher brain (at their own risk) to see the types of questions I ask myself as I am solving a problem. The student begins with a flow chart that is fully developed (good resource for inclusion classroom with ESE students needing more support) and gradually support is taken away.
The document includes: flow chart with full support and answer keys. The flow chart may be used with any multiplication/division problem using scientific notation.
