Just wanted to share this awesome graphic organizer that I made to help my students with the new Speaking and Listening Anchor standards under Common Core, specifically having discussions, while tying in the Writing Anchor Standards. After reading a text excerpt from a fiction or nonfiction book, newsela.com, or Scholastic Weekly, I give my students a question to discuss with a partner about the reading topic. They can summarize a story, give what they think a character's point of view might be, share an interesting fact, or their opinion on any reading topic.
I use this with all my students, but find that this discussion prompt is especially helpful for my ELLs, (English Language Learners) in classroom discussions. This helps them to get comfortable talking as well as using academic vocabulary from a close read. Also it get's them writing their ideas down, and writing comes easier for students once they have shared their ideas aloud with others. Finally the "What we will share box.. " requires that students collaborate on what they will share with the rest of the class from their discussion.
Prepare for and participate effectively in a range of conversations and collaborations with diverse partners, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.
