Most word sorts give students the category and ask them to classify the words. In this sort, students must not only classify words, but figure out what the categories are as well! It adds a layer of complexity to the task, but most students should still be able to complete the activity independently, making this a great literacy center!
Laminate the word cards, cut them out, and put them in a plastic baggie. Students read and sort the words, independently or in pairs, and then record the words on the record sheet. Students must also name the category.
