When students need a recipe to follow when rounding numbers from tens through hundred thousands, this teaching tool can be the ingredient they need to help them spice up their rounded results!
Common Core Math stresses that math students use precision at very young ages, and they need to learn how to methodically follow steps in order to reach the correct results.
The teaching tool, “Thinking Through Rounded Numbers”, walks students through precise steps by recognizing:
• Place value of the digits to be rounded
• Questioning if the digit should be rounded up to the nearest value or rounded down
• Making the decision according to rounding rules (see the rounding rhyme attached to this sheet)
• Then finally rounding the number.
After students learn how to use the rounding tool, they should be able to round numbers by prompting themselves independently, rather than having relying on someone else to question them through the process. The tool gives students confidence and independence in mastering rounding numbers.
Thinking Through Rounding Numbers is a great tool to use throughout the school year from introductory lessons, review, rounding higher numbers, and test prep. The tool can be used from second through upper grade levels and works great in intervention and tutoring lessons as well.
