Scaffold your students in adding detail to their narrative compositions using the 5Ws and 1H writing strategy (Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?). This lesson begins with a pre-assessment to gain insight into your students' current level of included detail in their narrative compositions. This lesson also includes the following effective teaching practices:
- opportunity for student self-evaluation and peer-evaluation
- the use of a mentor text to model a writing strategy
- the use of an anchor chart to practice the writing strategy (using the I do, we do, you all do, you do strategy)
- and more!
This lesson is intended for a small group of third grade students but could easily be adapted for whole group or for the 3-5 grade band.
