I love incorporating art history in my art lessons. After my trip to Europe I was inspired to create a European based lesson in all of my elementary classes.
For third grade I decided to take my students to the Vatican City. I showed them images of Rome and Saint Peters Basilica, along with pictures of mosaics. I explain how they are made, and how images often taught lessons back then because so many people couldn't read. The students then create their own mosaics using construction paper.
This lesson can last one class period or up to 4 depending on how you arrange it. This lesson plans includes essential questions, objectives, goals, national art standards, and a checklist for evaluation.
